The Curious Effect of the Fall

I don’t know if anyone out there is like me, but I find fall is usually my time to being new transformations. I always feel like searching out a new beginning. Be it a new hobby, or a way I’d like to change a habit into something more positive.

So far this month we’ve done really well cutting back on our alcohol consumption. We tend to put weight on very easily with alcohol of any kind, breads, pastas, sugar, baked goods etc. All of our other healthy habits are being cancelled out by this habitual beverage. We’ve been limiting ourselves to a few pints once a week and we are feeling better for it. Dorian is running again at the gym. I have started to walk to work everyday rather than bike which sounds less productive but I assure you it is a good move for me. When I bike, I tend to coast and look at all the beautiful old homes. When I walk, I am walking to the beat of music and usually suck in my gut (for some reason). I really enjoy walking and its what used to keep me in shape for years and years. In fact, my whole career I’ve walked to work and its only when I’m not does my weight really balloon (very recently). My awesome friend Alisha and I are going to get our yoga groove back on again next week. I love yoga. Love it. Its just such a pain in the ass getting there. No matter how I chalk it up, it takes me an hour to get there either by bus, bike or walk. So an hours class ends up eating 3 hours of my evening. See my dilemma?

Speaking of new routines, making Dorian’s lunches has ended up being really fun. He still enjoys seafood regularly so its either salmon sammichs or a refried beans wrap. I’ve been following suit and attempting to make mine as well. I am sick (literally) with the food in the market and am hard pressed to find anything vegan, healthy and not soul crushingly expensive. And Dorian is actually eating a great deal more than he used to at this new job. Personally I think its because he is working so much harder. I include with his sammich a piece of local or organic fruit (if we’re lucky both categories), a Vega bar, a raw food cookie and an extra smoothie. I am still making epic smoothies every morning. Its root season here in Ontario so its been a beet – blueberry – banana smoothie mornings. Kinda progressing into strawberries again since the everbearing bushes are still going strong. The market offers picked daily strawberries and I have been going full throttle with my addiction to them.

Really the most fun is that the dogs are now into the smoothies with us. Our old blind boy, Zinger, is unfortunately a recycler. Yes… he eats what he poops. Now in the morning he has his breakfast, rushes outside to relieve himself and rushes back in. He sits on his mat and drools, waiting for his smoothie. I’ve been making a little extra in the morning and give each of the furbabies about a 1/4-1/2 cup. Zinger LOVES wheatgrass, so I bought some freeze dried and have been adding it in. I am such a proud Momma, especially when everyone calls him a veggie dog (even though its not quite true).

Nana and Grampa shared their mighty potato haul with us this weekend. So tonight’s dinner will be roasted beets, brussel sprouts, potatoes and peppers (from our garden!) and of course MUSHROOMS. Interestingly, no dinner seems complete without them. I only wish I had of picked up carrots to accompany all of this. Can’t wait for the fall apples soon!!!

Enjoy your dinner tonight, I know I will πŸ™‚

Falling Off The Wagon

This summer has been a very busy one for us. Dorian got a new job, I’ve been working 6 days a week all summer, we took a weeks trip to Dominican Republic anddddd…. we got married. In all honesty, we didn’t fall completely off. Some good habits stayed while others got put on the back burner. The two weeks before we got married, I haven’t felt so healthy in… I can’t remember. I didn’t drink alcohol or eat sugar. My skin was clear! I did eat 75% raw everyday. Which was hard and expensive but man o man! I felt awesome.

The smoothies are still a go and really seem to keep us clean. There is a wonderful addition now by Progressive. Its their VeggieGreens. It has your complete serving of veggies in it. I still add in protein powder (Garden of Life), matcha, maca, cinnamon, plus kale from the garden, spinach and a few fruits such as bananas, strawberries, blueberries, apples, peaches – whatever I’ve got. I find if I stick to making them constantly (the greener the better!) the better we do throughout the day. We are just less likely to cave to sugar cravings or chip cravings. I did find a healthier alternative to chips – Beanitios! They are made with beans. GMO free, some vegan flavours, lots of taste and crunch. Beer is a whole other story! It’s also been a very very social summer. Lots of patio or porch nights filled with beers (Mill Street Organic) and saucy drinks. Truthfully, I feel quite pickled. I’ll be starting my cleanse again next week and have decided to give up sugar and alcohol. Well – except special occasions such as my birthday at the end of September πŸ˜‰

For our wedding we did offer salmon and organic chicken on the buffet (it was a 30 person wedding), vegan potato salads, and tons of lovely dishes from our local organic cafe. It was so satisfying to see our friends and family load up with heaping plates of healthy, local and organic food and then have them exclaim to us how wonderful all the food was. Most offered to take food home with them. Often you have to beg people to take a travel container! I was very proud indeed. However at the end of the evening, I had indulged in some liquor and took it upon myself that I would eat cheese. A few handfuls later and a few friends warning me of the consequences, it was all over. And I paid for it for days. A cheese hangover my friends, is far worse than an alcohol one. At least for me.

The following two weeks Dorian and I are finding ourselves trying to get back on the clean food-wagon. This is also the first time in nearly 6 years Dorian is not coming home for lunch anymore. So this means packing one. Trying to navigate this with him has been quite difficult. Toast with tomato and avocado isn’t really easy to make at work. He asked for a small brick of cheese (organic of course πŸ˜‰ ) with crackers as a snack. I caved and had a bite of it. And kicked myself. His first day he bought his lunch. Second day was made up of little snacks. Today I did it proper. Refried beans and lettuce on a Food for Life sprouted grains wrap, sliced apples, dried pineapple pieces, cheese and crackers. I guess this really is a trial and error. I’m the guilty one of buying my lunch all the time working at the market. But really, how bad is raw nut-cheese and raw crackers for lunch. Its only 10 dollars! Ugh.

With my restaurant job coming to an end after this week, I’m really looking forward to having the time to cook again. I’ve had a few days off this week and made a very delicious hemp hearts dip. It was suppose to be ‘cheese’ but there was too much liquid in it. Next time I will add less liquid and dehydrate it for a few hours so it can develop a rind on it. I love making new obscure recipes! Squash season is here and I plan on making some lovely soups and stews. Eeee!

Tonight is another social gathering and I’ve decided 2 beers will be enough and I’ll even take sparking water with frozen fruit to help me out. Hopefully with life not being so hectic anymore we will have time to blog more! πŸ˜‰
